The Textile Section of TICCIH has turned the disaster of CoVid-19 into an opportunity to engage in a wider way than many thought possible. Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin was able to facilitate a virtual meeting on 24 April 2020 instead of actually hosting us during the height of the pandemic in Europe. Although nothing can match the chance to interact with physical environments, to understand people and place, where scholars and practitioners meet, the day was a great success. The presentations are given here as pdf downloads. They encompass issues of urban planning, or its absence, in Ghent, Belgium, (Moermanns) and Mumbai, India, (Adarkar) and the astonishing quality, adaptive reuse challenges and achievements at mills in Russia (Ogirenko) and Lodz, Poland (Sowinska-Heim). Architectural history, the work of Swiss architect Carl Arnold Séquin-Bronner stretching from Italy to Finland, is discussed in collaborative research by Hanak (Switzerland) and Beran (Czechia). The HOS spinning and weaving mills in Germany, past and future, are discussed by Renz. Madry, presenting flax mills in Poland, shows that conservation solutions don’t always win through but a development in Isfahan, Iran, (Zadeh) shows what might yet be achieved. Oevermann and Watson present international typologies related to layout- the urban block or the production hall- and the types -flagship, landscape or time capsule- discussed at past TICCIH Textile Section meetings. We hope that 2021 will permit the concluding workshop in the series in Lodz, Poland and an opportunity to present a comparative study report to the TICCIH Congress in Montreal.
