The fifteenth SEHCYT Congress will be held in the city of Gijón (Asturias) between Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 June 2025. The SEHCYT Board of Directors invites its members and the community interested in the history of science and technology to meet during these days to address problems related to the spatial dimension of the generation and appropriation of knowledge that is in permanent circulation between different territories and different social groups.

The conference is organised around the theme “From the local to the global”. It aims to stimulate reflection on the role played by the places where scientific-technical knowledge is produced, its transnational circulation and the formation of global networks in which scientific- technical institutions and activities take place. It is necessary to study the role of science and technology in local networks and their planetary projection in these complex times in which the global dimension of phenomena such as armed conflicts, pandemics and climate change accompany us.

Given that the congress is co-organised with the INCUNA association dedicated to the study of industrial archaeology and cultural and natural heritage, the aim is also to promote studies and debates on the configuration, management and exhibition of scientific-technical heritage in its different manifestations, both in museums in different autonomous communities of Spain and in numerous educational centres.

Continuing with concerns expressed at previous SEHCYT congresses, the aim is also to continue promoting work related to the role played by women in the production and circulation of knowledge throughout history, especially in an autonomous community that is the birthplace of important women scientists such as the biochemist Margarita Salas.

For these reasons, the congress is organised around six thematic axes:

  • Scientific and technical heritage: the challenges of a cultural heritage
  • Science and technology in Asturias: from modernity to the present day
  • Transnational networks, transfers and circulation of techno-scientific knowledge 4. Challenges of environmental history
  • Women’s contributions to the production of knowledge
  • Free themes: papers of this nature will be organised on related tables.

Gijón, venue of the XV SEHCYT Congress, is a city with an important scientific-technical past and present, as shown by several current cultural facilities, among which the Museo del Pueblo de Asturias, the Museo del Ferrocarril, the Museo Casa Natal Jovellanos, the Botanical Garden and the Aquarium are worth mentioning. The collaboration of INCUNA will also make it possible to organise tours and routes through the iron and steel, mining and electrical heritage of the nearby central Asturian mining area on Saturday 21 June. The congress sessions will be held at the Universidad Laboral de Gijón.
